Protein Drugs

Proteins are macromolecules which made up of one or more polypeptides arranged in a biologically functional way. Protein is the executor of gene function. Proteins often bind to ligands such as coenzymes and cofactors, or to another proteins or other macromolecules such as DNA and RNA, or to complex macromolecular assemblies. Proteins are involved in every function in the living cells and possess a range of physiological functions, and protein-protein interaction is the basis of organism's life activities.

Protein drugs are protein products with certain biological activities for the prevention and diagnosis of diseases. They can be derived from plants and animals, or developed through biotechnology research. Protein drugs in a broad sense include all products whose chemical nature is protein or polypeptide, such as hormones, growth factors/cytokines, plasma proteins, enzymes, coagulation factors, antibodies, protein vaccines, etc.

Protein drugs are characterized by high activity, high specificity, low toxicity, clear biological function and good clinical application. They have become an important part of pharmaceutical products because of its low cost, high success rate, safety and reliability. However, there are also several obstacles in the development of protein drugs such as complex structure, short half-life, instability in vivo and in vitro, and high molecular weight.

Protein drugs are the most active and fast-growing part in the field of drug research and development, and one of the most promising industries in the twenty-first century. Therapeutic protein drugs are important for patients who need novel therapies. Protein drugs are developed to treat a wide variety of clinical indications, including cancers, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, diabetes neurodegenerative effects, exposure to infectious agents, and genetic disorders. Recent approved recombinant protein therapeutics ha been used to target specific sites.
