Mesenchymal Stem Cell

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells found in the bone marrow and are responsible for bone and cartilage repair. They have the ability to self-renewal and differentiate into not only mesoderm lineages, such as chondrocytes, osteocytes and adipocytes, but also ectodermic cells and endodermic cells. MSCs exist in almost all tissues. They can be easily isolated from the bone marrow, adipose tissue, the umbilical cord, peripheral blood, fetal liver, muscle, and lung and can be successfully expanded in vitro.

MSCs Therapy

From animal models to clinical trials, MSC has broad prospects in treating a variety of diseases, mainly tissue and immune disorders. Currently, there are more than 800 MSC-based clinical trials in the United States designed to evaluate the potential of MSC-based cell therapy. Some of these studies include bone and cartilage diseases, diabetes, and osteoarthritis (Fig.1). MSCs have shown promising results in preclinical and clinical studies for treating pain and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Degenerative disc disease (DDD), Multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Rosai-Dorfman Disease (RDD) and providing immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory responses. In addition, MSCs have the ability to exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects and therefore are used to treat transplant rejection or autoimmune diseases. They can also regenerate mesenchymal tissues such as bone, cartilage, muscle, ligaments, tendons, and adipose and can be utilized for many beneficial purposes.
